The Monuments division monitors compliance with the Dutch Monuments and Historic Buildings Act of 1988 regarding listed buildings and structures. The Monuments division supervises all municipalities issuing permits to alter or restore monuments and oversees spatial policy relating to protected areas. The division also supervises the maintenance of national monuments. The Monuments division monitors the registration of monuments and protected areas at a national level. It also supervises private parties involved (owners, foundations and interest groups), specifically in the area of management and use of the monuments.
